Trinkets and Arrows

After having been quite ill for the past two and a half weeks, I feel I am finally getting my bearings once again.

I’ve been working with my partners on Dark Red Press and beginning to really build something of that. It has been quite fun and I’ve been learning a lot along the way!

As for my writing, I had written an origin story for one of the characters in my novel The Weight Of Night, Lily Abrams. She’s a feisty little redhead with a difficult backstory. After I had written it, I re-read it and realized that it was far too distant for what I wanted. I needed the reader to see inside her head more, to understand the choices she makes and why, good or bad.

So, now I’m going through the process of rewriting the story in first person. It has a greater feel of immediacy now. You get to see Lily’s world through Lily’s eyes, which is a real treat for those who found her brusque personality so damned charming in the novel.

Lily plays a much greater part in the next novel of the Progeny Series (slated for next year), but this little tale should keep readers’ appetites whetted for the coming adventures.

In addition to Lily’s story, titled Trinkets And Arrows, I’m in the process of revitalizing a story I wrote a few years back that is more of a paranormal romance/thriller, but it certainly isn’t your average take on the subject matter. That story is Valence Of Infinity, and it should be coming out sometime later this year.

There is just so much to do and so little fricking time! You know what I mean?

Writing Back Story

I’ve been spending most of my time working on the Dark Red Press, LLC venture with my cohorts and I’ve been less than reliable in my posts of late. So, today, we’re back to talking about my favorite subject: writing!

I’m finding it interesting – and let me know if you’ve encountered the same – that when we’ve got a character that stands out, it can sometimes be a challenge to create a really good “origin” story.

I’m in the process of getting through the first draft of Trinkets and Arrows, an origin story for one of the characters who appears in my novel The Weight Of Night (which, I feel is picking up some momentum with book bloggers and readers, lately).

Firstly, Lily Abrams is a tough character to write in a way; but, in another way, she just shows up and does her thing. She is unique in her perspective on the world. She plays everything close to the chest, due to her prior experiences, and it can be quite frustrating to the other characters; sometimes to the reader, as well.

However, she has a good heart and that shines through, too.

Putting all of this together (and, to make the story as unique as Lily, herself) is not an easy task. I’ve got the gist of the tale and I know how much the poor girl goes through during the timeline covered by the story, as well as the time leading up to it. What I don’t want to do is just have it come across as brutal and cold. Lily’s story is not a cautionary tale, it is not a lesson in life…it is merely an examination of one demigod’s life and how she handles the obstacles put before her. Right or wrong, she does what she must to survive. This trait is nothing less than beaten into her, and she has a firm grasp on it. With complete understanding and acceptance of its consequences.

So, I’m not certain what I’m asking, if anything. I suppose this is little more than a stream of consciousness post about writing back-story.

What’s your take? Have you ever created a great character through the evolution of a story, only to not be able to truly delve into that character’s past life?

Man. They do become real, don’t they?

Caffeine and Chocolate Might Help

I know that I normally talk mythology on Wednesday’s – but we interrupt our regular programming to bring you this important message:

I’ve gotten myself caught up in a new project that is consuming a lot of my time and I foresee it consuming quite a bit more in the months to come. It is pretty big news from our perspective (I will explain the “our” part of that statement on DR Day); and, DR Day will be May 1st if all goes well. Things are going well at this time, too!

In addition to that project, I’ve been working on a new e-novella which will see a June release on all the major eBook stores!  If you’ve read my collection of short stories, Ordeals, it begins with the story One Night In Hollywood. Well, that story is part of a greater whole: my Valence of Infinity series (VoI). The new e-novella will be in that same universe and you will be introduced to the only character I have ever written about that is truly semi-autobiographical: David “Mercury” Stone.

I’ve been working on Stone’s origin story for, well, more years than I care to count. Once I get my next two writing projects completed – Red Tome, the second novel in the Progeny series, and Harder vs Stone, the VoI story I mentioned above – I will return my focus to One Breath Too Far, Stone’s origin story.

In addition to all of that, I’ve been doing some graphics arts, some book cover design and redoing the Ordeals cover for a re-release (more to come on that, as well). I swear it seems that there are simply not enough hours in the day to do all that I want and need to do. I’ve got a lovely, irrepressible Wife that needs some amount of my time (thank God!) and two dogs who think I should always be paying attention to them first and foremost.

Add to this the wonderful task of promoting my novel, heightening my presence on the social networks, and some side jobs developing websites and the occasional photography gig…well, you see what I mean about hours in the day.

And, I’ve just been asked if I would like to speak at an upcoming Dallas area publishing forum. (Still working out the details on that one!)

I wonder how much caffeine and chocolate it would take to give me a week without sleep. Any ideas?

P.S. – Oh, and don’t miss the latest post by Christine Rose, which has a podcast of a self-publishing forum for your listening pleasure!  As well, check out Brian Fatah Steele’s latest entry which talks about our fellow author, Court Ellyn’s new epic novella, Mists Of Blackfen Bog. (Brian created the cover art! Excellent work!)

P.S.S. – And, of course, don’t forget to take advantage of my Buy One Get one Free offer, running until May 31st!

Buy One Get One Free

One of the toughest parts of being a writer these days is the fact that you’re completely responsible for your own promotion. Whether you’re signed up with one of the NY Big Boys, a small independent publisher, or self-published, it is all on you to get the word out on your book(s).

We have to be our own cheerleader. We have to be able to turn on the charm at a moment’s notice in order to present the best front for promoting our work. No one else is going to do it for us. No one.

So, I had an idea for a giveaway, just to see how much influence free stuff holds over readers (if they’re anything like me, then it should be a lot!). And today, I found I was not the only one thinking this way…

My friend and fellow author, Christine Rose (with her hubby, Ethan), wrote a wonderful YA series of novels called Rowan Of The Wood.  She is now giving the first novel in that series away for the purpose of an experiment. So, go steal her book!

As for myself, I’m setting up a 2-for-1 for the next six weeks. In an effort to get my novel out there to more readers, as well as share more writings, I will be giving away a free copy of Ordeals – a collection to anyone who purchases my novel The Weight Of Night, beginning today and running through the end of May. Keep in mind that The Weight Of Night is only 99 cents on Amazon (for the Kindle) and B&N.com (for the Nook), as well as on Smashwords in pretty much any eReader format.

The deal is simple: between now and May 31st, just send me any proof of purchase (usually an email from the store (Amazon/B&N)) for The Weight Of Night, and I will provide a link to download, in whatever format you like, my short story collection, Ordeals. It’s that easy!

Here is the book description for The Weight Of Night:

Alexis Rain is not your average high school girl. She has spent her entire life sheltered from the truth of who she really is: a child of mythological lineage.

The Weight Of Night

The Weight Of Night by C.L. Stegall

When her mom is stolen from her without warning, Alexis is suddenly thrown into a whirlwind world of danger and secret agendas, of demigods and deities. When a self-righteous deity decides that Alexis is his best hope for retrieving an ancient artifact, she finds herself on the self-discovery journey of a lifetime, tracking a killer and a kidnapper.

With her best friend Keats in tow, she sets off to make her own destiny. Her path will take her to London, Dagestan and Hollywood. She will have to come to grips with who she truly is, and just what she might be capable of, if she wants to survive long enough to save the one person in the world for whom she cares the most.

The Weight Of Night is a tense, rousing and sometimes humorous coming of age tale involving car crashes, insurgents, walking canes and ancient Greek gods.

Here is the book description for Ordeals – a collection:

Ordeals - a collection

Ordeals by C.L. Stegall

Ordeals is a collection of short stories, each dealing with individuals who face unusual andtrying circumstances. A mix of genres, some dark and others hopeful, Ordeals reveals corners of ourselves usually kept hidden.

Consisting of six unique and diverse tales of adversity, Ordeals will stick with you long after the last page is turned.

Two books for less than a dollar…that’s a pretty good deal if I do say so myself! :-)
